I was prepping a candidate for a job interview.

She has been in the field for over 25 years. She has been on a job search for a while and was getting a bit downhearted.

She wondered if she was too old? Or maybe she just did not have current enough technology experience? Could it be her interviewing skills?

Maybe she should just go volunteer somewhere and leave tech altogether?

Her head was spinning with thoughts that were not setting her up for success.

Give Your Stinkin’ Thinkin’ a Rest.

The good news was that she had an upcoming interview at one of my clients. She needed to get her head in the right space or this was not going to go well.

Then I remembered a conversation we had the first time we had talked.

She had just walked in from the garage to take our call. She said she was feeling pretty good about herself. She had just changed the radiator in her car using YouTube to show her how.

To be honest, my first thought was, Sure, like the car is going to start.

But who am I not go give her the benefit of the doubt, so I asked, Uh…did it start?

Yep! The car started! I could feel her excitement and pride come across the airwaves.

Like me, she did not think the car would start and when it did, she could not have felt more powerful.

So, as I was getting her ready for this interview, I reminded her of this story.

I suggested that she might want to use this story during the interview. If they ask her about tools and technologies she has yet to work with she could respond with her radiator story as a way to show how she can learn new things quickly and her resourcefulness.

She told the radiator story and the interview went great. More importantly, she has confidence in her ability to contribute what she knows and learn what she doesn’t.

Vroom. Vroom.
