I remember walking into the small office that I shared with 4 other software sales reps – all guys.

They had been talking … about me.

They got quiet as I entered the room but then did that thing that happens when you are in third grade. They began the LOUD WHISPER as if I could not hear them criticizing how I looked, diminishing my sales skills, implying that I had an “in” with the boss, that I had better territory.

I get it. I was the number 1 software sales rep for the second year in a row.

I am sure there were times, when I was 12, that I had to put down others in order to feel better about myself.

But it was at that moment that I realized that they had done me a favor. Yes, I was hurt. But I also knew that this was my inciting incident. The catalyst that would change my career trajectory forever and move me out of corporate and launch my new career as an entrepreneur.

That is when I realized that because I was in sales people could say whatever they wanted about me, but the numbers did not lie.

I was crushing it and they weren’t. Sorry, not sorry.

I realized that people might insult me, exclude me, and talk behind my back but they cannot stop my success.

And that is when I knew that I was going to quit corporate America and take what I had just learned about my ability to succeed and do what I am suggesting you do, BYOB: Becoming Your Own Boss.
