In the classic book by Bronnie Ware,ย The Five Regrets of the Dying, the top regret is not having the courage to live a life true to yourself, not the life others expected of you.

This closely mirrors the #1 regret Iโ€™ve heard over and over in career coaching and in my 25 years as a recruiter:

“I wish I had taken the risk to go after my career dreams sooner.”

But there’s another regret that runs a close secondโ€”and itโ€™s the one that quietly impacts every stage of a career:

“I wish I had nurtured my network and built career visibility more consistently.”

Insideย Career Alchemy Academy, we teach that your career grows on three pillars:

  1. Your Alchemist Visionย โ€“ The inner compass that aligns your self-belief and gives you direction. Itโ€™s not about having all the details figured outโ€”it starts as a feeling of what you want and becomes clearer as you move toward it. We bring this vision to life through a tool we call the 3 VIPsโ€”Very Important Prioritiesโ€”to guide short-term action.
  2. Your Alchemist Pathย โ€“ How you make your career dreams real. It includes:
    • Visibility
    • Alignment & Agreement
    • Delivering Results
  3. Your Alchemist Toolsย โ€“ The practices and mindsets that support growth, including:
    • The 3 VIPโ€™s (Very Important Priorities)
    • The Mindset Model (to redirect unhelpful thoughts)
    • Career Retrospectives (to evaluate, learn and grow)
    • And deepening your Spiritual Intelligence (SQ) โ€ฆ your connection to inner wisdom and belief in and receiving guidance from unseen support

Letโ€™s Talk About Step 1 on your Path: Visibility

Right now, Iโ€™m deep in the process of re-recording trainings inside the Academy, and Iโ€™ve been laser-focused on Pillar Twoโ€”Your Path. The very first element of that path?ย Creating visibility.

Visibility isnโ€™t something you suddenly do when youโ€™re ready for a new job. Itโ€™s something you nurtureย all the time.

Over the years, I canโ€™t count how many people have come to meโ€”laid off, burned out, or ready for something newโ€”and said,

I shouldโ€™ve been building my visibility all along.”

What Visibilityย Reallyย Means

Visibility isnโ€™t about putting yourself in the spotlight.

Itโ€™s aboutย sharing your light.

Itโ€™s about being of service, giving value, and allowing others toย seeย your gifts.

When you reframe visibility this wayโ€”as an act of generosity and contributionโ€”it feels more authentic. And it becomes a practice youโ€™ll want to keep up regularly, not just when you’re in need.

Inside the Academy, we dive into:

  • Why visibility is essential
  • The mindset and energy you need to be in to make it work
  • And dozens of visibility vehicles for every step in your career โ€ฆ whether youโ€™re job hunting, pivoting your career or repositioning yourself inside your current company.

Why We Wait Too Long

Most people donโ€™t start building visibility until something shakes up their career:

  • A layoff
  • A promotion that never comes
  • An approaching empty nest or retirement
  • Or just that quiet voice saying, โ€œI want more than this.โ€

And when that moment comes, many feel awkward reaching out, because they havenโ€™t kept up those connections. They say things like:

I donโ€™t want to ask for something now when I havenโ€™t talked to them in years.”

Thatโ€™s why regret #2 is so painful.ย Because itโ€™s avoidable.

The New Habit to Build

Hereโ€™s what I want you to know:

  • When you are visible, you donโ€™t just serve yourself โ€ฆ you serve others.
  • When you consistently show up and shine your light, you create opportunities for people to find you. Maybe about a job opportunity or maybe to ask for your advice and wisdom.
  • And when a need arisesโ€”a team member to mentor, a job to fill, a speaker to book, a board seat to fillโ€”youโ€™re already in the mix.

Youโ€™re not scrambling to show upโ€ฆ

Youโ€™ve been showing up all along.

The key is to findย visibility vehicles that energize youโ€”not drain youโ€”and commit to showing up in those spaces regularly.

Because the result is twofold:

  1. Others know who you are and what you offer.
  2. And you feel more confident asking for what you need, because youโ€™ve already been giving, connecting, and contributing all along.
