I hear people say, “Career change is hard.”
Like sticking to healthy eating is hard.
Like job searches are hard.
Like relationships are hard.
Believe me, I get it.
Change is hard… if we let it be.
Today, I want to share a practice that has profoundly changed me.
My belief in myself—and in my ability to turn my career dreams into reality—no longer feels like wishful thinking.
What changed?
I created my Bridge Identity. That version of me between my Present Self and my Future Self who is already living my career dream.
How to Create Your Career Bridge Identity
TIP: You’ll want to write this out. I always prefer pen and paper, but you do you.
Step 1: You Today
Start with your Present Self. What do you want in your career?
- More work-life balance?
- Greater confidence?
- A flexible schedule?
- Higher pay? Better benefits?
- Deeper connection? Patience? A leadership role?
Write down everything that would make up your ideal future role.
Step 2: You 6 Months from Now
Now meet your Future Self. It’s six months later, and much of what you wrote down has happened.
- You’re energized and using your strengths.
- You communicate with clarity and confidence.
- You’re respected. You feel deeply satisfied.
- You’re making a difference and having impact.
- You’re asking for and receiving support.
- You’re paid well.
- You’re calm, centered, and lit up.
- You have energy for both your work and your life.
- You’re a beacon for your team.
- You trust and act on your inner wisdom and spirit-centered guidance.
Feel this version of you. Step into it. It may feel fuzzy … that’s okay.
Now notice:
The problem isn’t where you are now.
It’s not that you’re not yet where you want to be.
The problem is that you haven’t created a Bridge Identity to carry you from one version of you to the other.
Step 3: Meet Your Bridge Identity
Below are characteristics of your Bridge Identity.
Circle or write down the ones you’re willing to try on starting now (feel free to add some of your own):
Your Bridge identity:
- Accepts that change is hard, your Bridge Identity doesn’t try to fight against or resist the hard.
- Knows that missteps are likely going to happen along the path from your present self to your future self. You are not inviting them, but you embrace the missteps when they come and find the wisdom that they bring.
- Has tools to help navigate the hazy path and get through the hard on the way to its Future Self AND USES THEM! Your Bridge Identity knows that when you most feel like giving up you have tools. You are on to yourself. You no longer say, “why bother?” or “who has the time?”. You just pick a tool and use it … even when you don’t wanna.
- Understands that when it feels hard, you are growing. Growth means that you have left the safety of your comfort zone and there is a sense of pride in that.
- Believes you are always guided to the next step and supported in the process.
- Asks for help in the form of hiring a coach, connecting with a mentor, colleague, or friend with enthusiasm.
Your Bridge Identity, Another Way
Think of it like strength training.
Your Future Self wants to lift 30-pound weights for 20 reps.
But today? That feels impossible.
Your Bridge Identity picks up the 5-pound weights. It’s hard—but doable.
Eventually 5 pounds feels easy.
You add 5 more.
Then 5 more.
Until one day—you’re repping those 30-pound weights like it’s nothing.
That’s your new normal.
You’ll never (barring injury) go back to 5-pound weights. You’ve become your Future Self who is now happily becoming the new Bridge Identity that is excited to meet your Future Future Self😊.
So, here’s the question:
Do you want to stay in the comfort of light weights…
or become someone stronger, more accomplished, and feeling proud?
You get to choose the identity you want to claim.
Find your Bridge Identity. Let’s go set your new personal best.
