I hear people say, โCareer change is hard.โ Like sticking to healthy eating is hard. Like job searches are hard. Like relationships are hard. Believe me, I get it. Changeย isย hardโฆ if we let it be. Today, I want to share a practice that has profoundly changed me. My belief in myselfโand in my ability to turn my career dreams into realityโno longer feels like wishful thinking. What changed? I created myย Bridge Identity.ย That version of me between my Present Self and my Future Self who is already living my career dream. How to Create Your Career Bridge IdentityTIP:ย Youโll want to write this out. I always prefer pen and paper, but you do you. Step 1: You Today Start with yourย Present Self.ย What do you want in your career? - More work-life balance?
- Greater confidence?
- A flexible schedule?
- Higher pay? Better benefits?
- Deeper connection? Patience? A leadership role?
Write downย everythingย that would make up your ideal future role. Step 2: You 6 Months from Now Now meet yourย Future Self.ย It’s six months later, and much of what you wrote down has happened. - Youโre energized and using your strengths.
- You communicate with clarity and confidence.
- Youโre respected. You feel deeply satisfied.
- Youโre making a difference and having impact.
- Youโre asking for and receiving support.
- Youโre paid well.
- Youโre calm, centered, and lit up.
- You have energy for both your work and your life.
- Youโre a beacon for your team.
- You trust and act on your inner wisdom and spirit-centered guidance.
Feel this version of you. Step into it. It may feel fuzzy โฆ thatโs okay. Now notice: The problem isnโt where you are now. Itโs not that you’re not yet where you want to be. The problem is that you havenโt created aย Bridge Identityย to carry you from one version of you to the other. Step 3: Meet Your Bridge Identity Below are characteristics of your Bridge Identity. Circle or write downย the ones youโre willing to try onย starting now (feel free to add some of your own): Your Bridge identity: - Accepts that change is hard, your Bridge Identity doesn’t try to fight against or resist the hard.
- Knows that missteps are likely going to happenย along the path from your present self to your future self. You are not inviting them, but youย embrace the misstepsย when they come and find the wisdom that they bring.
- Has tools to help navigate the hazy path and get through the hard on the way to its Future Self AND USES THEM!ย Your Bridge Identity knows that when you most feel like giving up you have tools. You are on to yourself. You no longer say, โwhy bother?โ or โwho has the time?โ. You just pick a tool and use it โฆ even when you donโt wanna.
- Understands thatย when it feels hard, you are growing.ย Growth means that you have left the safety of your comfort zone and there is a sense of pride in that.
- Believes you areย always guided to the next step and supported in the process.
- Asks for helpย in the form of hiring a coach, connecting with a mentor, colleague, or friend with enthusiasm.
Your Bridge Identity, Another WayThink of it like strength training. Your Future Self wants to lift 30-pound weights for 20 reps. But today? That feels impossible. Your Bridge Identity picks up the 5-pound weights. Itโs hardโbut doable. Eventually 5 pounds feels easy. You add 5 more. Then 5 more. Until one dayโyouโre repping those 30-pound weights like itโs nothing. Thatโs your new normal. Youโll never (barring injury) go back to 5-pound weights. Youโve become your Future Self who is now happily becoming the new Bridge Identity that is excited to meet your Future Future Self๐. So, hereโs the question: Do you want to stay in the comfort of light weightsโฆ or become someone stronger, more accomplished, and feeling proud? You get to choose the identity you want to claim.
